Air Quality Biomonitoring
with Bees
We carry out studies of bees which allow us to identify the presence of pesticides, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), among other compounds, in the monitored areas.
How does it work?
1. Installation of Bioindicator Hives
With the installation of beehives, MELILAB supports the preservation of bees whose role is vital for humanity and the ecosystem.
2. Sampling
Depending on the contaminants to be studied, sampling is carried out in the hives installed on the study site.
3. Analysis of samples in the laboratory
The quantification of particles and the description of their atomic composition are carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), as well as interpretation of the state of health of the bees and the quality and diversity of the flowers in the area.
4. Integration of results in the sustainable development plans
The results obtained are integrated into your sustainable development approach and provide you with objective proof to be able to make them part of compliance strategy within ISO standards, Agenda 21, among others.
